A day of site visits were arranged this month providing the opportunity for all team members to visit some of our live projects including Maxwell Road, Gap Homes Stirling, and the recently completed New Olympia House.

Planning consent has been granted for the Take A Bow Opportunity Centre in Kilmarnock. The £1.2m retrofit and extension of the existing community facility will significantly reduce the operational carbon of the building and provide changing rooms, an improved entrance and reception area, and new community spaces throughout the building.

PLANNING CONSENT

Edinburgh City Council have granted planning consent for the retrofit of a former warehouse building into an Apart-hotel. The project is the first planning consent in the city for our client HubCap.

SITE START

Works have commenced on site at our Gap Homes Stirling project for children’s charity Barnardo’s. When complete the project will provide four one bed homes for young care leavers and one two bed home for a care worker.

In June our new studio hosted ‘Learning from Elizabeth’ Designing for Wellbeing as part of the Architecture Fringe 2023 programme. The event was chaired by Tamsie Thomson (CEO of the RIAS) and presentations were given by Studio Directors Jennifer O’Donnell and Michael Dougall alongside Darren Wilson of White Arkitekter and Dr Valentina Bold from The Crichton Trust.

New Project: O’DonnellBrown have been selected to work on the redevelopment of the grade B listed Pipe Factory in the heart of Glasgow’s Barras market. The former factory of clay smoking pipes will be refurbished to provide a creative home and hub for young people from marginalised communities; the local community of Calton and the Barras; and early career artists, architects and designers.

O’DonnellBrown Architects with White Arkitekter and Ekkist selected as winners of The Crichton Project. When built, the new £15 million building will transform cultural provision in Dumfries and Galloway, while complementing the extraordinary range of facilities and organisations at The Crichton. Planning approval has been granted by Glasgow City Council for our Maxwell Park Pavilion project. Working closely with local charities Friends of Maxwell Parkand the Pollokshields Burgh Hall Trust we designed a much needed multi-use community space regenerating an empty council depot area in our local neighbourhood park in Glasgow.

We were delighted to be presented with two design awards at the Glasgow Institute of Architects Design Awards this year. Our project for Sprigg won in the Small Works category and also was awarded the 2022 Wood for Good Award.

Sam Brown and Ross Cameron were invited to present at Oasis Farm in London as part of Museum of Architeture’s Community - Led Conference. Sam and Ross were joined by our client Angie McCallum, Chair of the Millport Town Hall Charity, to present our ongoing refurbishment and extension project at Millport Town Hall.

On 26th October O’DonnellBrown were pleased to host visitors from France representing the Association, Maitre d’Ouvrages (architects, developers, and public clients). The event discussed the topic of Regeneration and Retrofit in a Glasgow context with presentations from Glasgow City Council, Clyde Gateway, and the Glasgow Building Preservation Trust.

We are delighted to have been shortlisted for The Crichton Project - a new cultural building in Dumfries and Galloway. This significant new space will contain exhibition and archive facilities - enhancing people’s understanding of the Crichton’s 180 year heritage and innovation in mental health care. Planning approval has been granted by Glasgow City Council for our Gap Homes North Glasgow project on behalf of Barnardo’s Scotland. The development will provide four purpose built homes for care experienced young people.

Millport Town Hall Charity have secured funding to enable development of phase 2 of their project. The remaining basement area will be retro-fitted to create a heritage centre, a green room, an office, and a men’s shed.

We are excited to be welcoming two students from the University of Strathclyde to the office who will be working with us over the coming months as part of the Experience of Practice Scheme. As part of the scheme they will gain valuable experience in practice during their architectural education, something we see as a fantastic opportunity for both student and practice and central to our ethos and continued involvement in architectural teaching and education.

O’DonnellBrown are looking for an experienced Architect, with a minimum of five years post Part 3 experience, to join our growing team in our leafy garden studio.

The role would initially involve supporting and coordinating the delivery of a large-scale residential project in Glasgow’s south side. You would be working collaboratively, as part of a highly motivated team, to design and deliver quality buildings. 

We are an award winning, design led practice with high aspirations, and we are looking for people who feel they would be able to help us shape the future of the practice going forward.

Key requirements

• Five years post-Part 3 experience (minimum)

• Significant job running experience, ideally on major residential projects, from inception through to completion

• Talented designer with excellent detailing ability

• Experience to offer technical and design-led mentorship to less experienced members of the team

• CAD proficiency, 3D modelling skills and Adobe Creative Suite experience advantageous

Personal attributes

• Confidence and experience to be client and contractor facing

• Self-motivated, driven and proactive

• Exceptional organisational and communication skill

• Ability to work well in a team and confidently as an individual

Salary commensurate with experience.
