The Pipe Factory has had a rich and varied history. As the name suggests, its original 1877 function was part of a factory for the production of clay smoking pipes. With the introduction of briar smoking pipes, and the general de-industrialisation of Glasgow, the Pipe Factory closed is doors in the 1950s. Following this the building was a night club, shop, part of the Barras Market and was even used as a flat in the attic space. More recently it has been a space for artists to exhibit their works, or as studio and workshop spaces for makers and the community. The new use will be a continuation of this, and provide studio and event spaces for local creative and community businesses under the management of The Friends of the Pipe Factory.
