Gap Homes Stirling We are pleased to have completed five ‘Gap Homes’ in Stirling for the children’s charity Barnardo's Scotland @barnardos_uk. The homes which are purpose-built houses for young people leaving the care system are part of a wider programme developed by Barnardo’s in response to the lack of suitable housing and support available to young people at the point of leaving care. It has been evidenced that poor quality housing and a lack of support increases the likelihood of homelessness. This is exacerbated by a lack of suitable accommodation for young people preparing to live independently. The homes follow the ‘Gap Homes’ cluster model developed by Barnardo’s in collaboration with young people who are care experienced. O’DonnellBrown designed the homes based on the model principles, creating four one bed homes and one two bed staff house arranged around a secure landscape courtyard which provides a positive outlook for each home and is intended to improve the health and wellbeing of each resident. ‘Gap Homes’ Stirling promoted circular design principles throughout the design and construction period opting for an off-site closed panel solution for the timber kit from Scotframe to minimise on-site waste and also installing kitchens which were repurposed from unwanted stock that was due to be disposed of. The new homes were delivered by Morris & Spottiswood and in collaboration with @designengworkshop, Brown+ Wallace, and @k_r_a_f_t_a_r_c_h.
