Wood for Identity Post 3/3 Timber facades can give a distinct identity to buildings in many contexts. The new timber colonnade and stairway at Cubitt Town Junior School provides a new, multipurpose space for the school whilst also linking to the existing building and playground. Timber is used to create a built addition to the school that juxtaposes against the existing school creating an individual, soft and warm identity. Through use of a pitched, articulated roof and multiple sets of double doors on the West Elevation, the space is light and airy whilst also being able to operate as an extension to the playground. The new extension of Cyril Jackson Primary School uses a pre weathered timber cladding to sensitively harmonise with the existing london stock and unusual geometries of the existing building. The timber offers a warm, natural face to the building in contrast to the harder existing material palette. This directly responds to the school’s wish for a greener, organic first impression of the school for visitors. A new canopy structure at Seven Mills Primary provides much needed shade and shelter to the playground with its form responding directly to the new red brick building. It also looks to connect as lightly as possible to the ground surface through the use of slender, white steel columns. The timber cladding has helped create a new and unique identity for the Swanlea Sixth Form school building and gives it both a robust street elevation, through its strong verticals and dark colour, and a softer garden elevation, through the materials inherent natural qualities.
