Collaboration with Artists Post 2/3 Creating place and space is a collective endeavour. We believe that the most successful and sustainable designs are those developed in collaboration - we are energised by working closely with our clients, local communities, the people who will ultimately use these places and spaces, artists and all of the expert professionals that we work with. The Rainbow Pavilion in Strathclyde Country Park was designed in close collaboration with Glasgow-based artist @katevrobertson. Together, we explored creative ways of re-using discarded materials and developed environmentally sustainable construction methods to create a structural artwork. A series of rain screens, conceived by Kate using layers of metal mesh, creates shadows across the floor mimicking the reflection of water on the adjacent Strathclyde Loch. The layering of the mesh, and the pattern of battens holding the mesh, were developed following workshops with pupils from New Monkland Primary School. A further series of rain screens within the roof plane of the pavilion are made of recycled film from the inside of broken and discarded mobile phones, tablets and laptop screens. Kate launched a public campaign to collect broken or unwanted devices from the community, which would otherwise have gone to landfill. The collected material was catalogued and then used by Robertson to create the structural artwork which integrates seamlessly with the timber structure. The large patchwork pattern reflects and distorts the sunlight, creating rainbow prisms that bounce around the interior, brought to life by the movement of people using the space. The images document the design process, test panels, material catalogues, technical drawings and the outcome.
