Bethnal Green Park Nursery Post 1/3 Retrofit and conversion of a redundant park rangers building in Bethnal Green Gardens, London. The brief was to create a nursery facility within the east London park. Previously used as a ranger’s office and office/storage facility, the design reused the existing building, opening up the cellular inside and facades to create a light, bright, open plan space with a strong connection to its park setting. The building’s location in the centre of the park posed challenges relating to security to enable the building to be fully secured when not in use. We used perforated metal panels to wrap the building to provide this security whilst also generating a new identity for the building and provide a valuable park asset for the local community. As a practice, we aim to create spaces that support the wellbeing of people who use them. In this case we use large and generous openings in the façade to strengthen connections between the nursery spaces and the park creating a healthy learning environment, whilst the semi-transparent panels offer shade in warmer weather without obstructing views to the park beyond.
