2/3 The Pipe Factory A new brick clad lift shaft is proposed in the western pend area to make all floors fully accessible. This accesses the floors by removing unsympathetic blockwork infill to former openings, and delicately touching the roofscape with a glass link. Drawing on the textured designs of Victorian pipes made at the Pipe Factory, the materiality of the lift shaft sits in dialogue with the existing building in its tone and detail, a red brick double stacked Flemish bond creates a woven pattern that transitions to a fully stacked bond at eaves level, accentuating the verticality of the lift shaft. The junction detail with the existing building has been carefully considered so that it corbels back to create a shadow gap detail, allowing the existing brick pilasters and horizontal banding space to be expressed. This also clearly delineates the difference between new and existing brickwork.
