Sprigg Sauchiehall Street Post 2/3 We are delighted that our Sprigg project in Glasgow won the Small Works and the Wood for Good Awards at the @glasgowinstituteofarchitects Design Awards last Friday. Congratulations to our Client @wearesprigg, McNee Building Services and also @designengworkshop. Our starting point was the building itself – McLellan Galleries – constructed in 1865, and housing Glasgow School of Art until the school relocated to Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s new building on Renfrew Street, only a short walk away, at the end of the 19th century. We stripped the interior back to its raw material of blockwork walls, concrete floor and concrete tray soffit, painting it all black to act as a backdrop. We then inserted a fixing-less timber frame to contain the core activities of the shop in a carefully crafted and composed arrangement of light-coloured shop counters, work benches and furniture. Tables, chairs, storage, food delivery collection shelving and waiting area have all been carefully designed to offer the best experience for users, and to reflect the Sprigg identity. The project meticulously considered every detail to ensure the concept and experience for the user was exactly as intended – to maximise the experience of all users. Light fittings and triangular tiles used on the counters were chosen to further the material care and expression at the heart of our concept and approach. As you enter the shop handmade tiles from a Scottish Highland designer were used, specifically chosen to express the importance of craft behind the project.
