New Homes at the Govan Graving Docks – Materiality and Details The Govan Road East and Dock 2 buildings are distinctive, taller buildings, assisting with way finding across the site, and marking key locations, whilst knitting into a family of solid and robust masonry buildings. Key points: • The arch motif around the base of the Dock 2 building takes reference from the existing Pump House and historic buildings which previously existed on site, grounding the proposal within its context, and creating a unique and robust frontage onto the new public square. • Horizontal datums take reference from dock geometries and nearby residential tenement blocks • Layered façade articulation differentiates the Govan Road East and Dock 2 buildings from the linear buildings, with deeper window reveals, and stacked soldier course and fluted metal detailing over windows. Rusticated brickwork on the first floor is used to further articulate the facades. • A warmer tone of brickwork is proposed in contrast to the linear buildings along Govan Road and Clydebrae Street. • The buildings have recessed balconies at their corners and communal terrace space at podium level, along with access to an abundance of public open space. Models and 3D visuals were used throughout the design process to test emerging design options and communicate ideas. A number of different approaches were explored for the two landmark buildings.
