New homes along Govan Rd – design process The new buildings along Govan Road follow the geometry of the existing dock structures, with their form responding to key routes and site geometries. Picking up on a rhythm of landmarks along Govan Road, we are proposing two linear buildings with a landmark building at the east end, marking the site access and the start of Dock 3. This bookends a second landmark building at the head of Dock 2. Active frontages will be created with entrances to cores and ground floor flats along Govan Road side and the quayside of the new buildings. Generous cut throughs, or pends, along with public open space, will maintain views through buildings across the listed dock structures, aligning with the listed dock stairs. As part of the wider site vision, a bridge crossing will be reinstated across the middle of Dock 3 on the line of historic ‘mid’ dock gates, connecting Govan Road with the Clyde Walkway which runs east to west between Dock 2 and 3. Similarly, at the east end of Dock 3, new bridge access will be created and reinstated across the top of the existing dock gates, providing further access and permeability. As part of the residential proposals, two new staircases from the public open spaces on Govan Road will link down to the Dock 3 quayside with level access available from the east and west. Four new private staircases will link the pends ground floor level down to the Dock 3 quayside. The Dock 3 quayside will remain public open space.
