We are delighted that New Olympia House has been shortlisted for the AJ Retrofit Awards, for the category of 'positive addition for projects under £5 million'. 'The @architectsjournal Retrofit & Reuse Awards celebrate architectural expertise and ingenuity in the physical and environmental adaption and upgrade of buildings, and the #reuse of building materials and structure in response to the climate emergency and changing requirements of use.' The project sought to remove years of unsympathetic compartmentalising alterations and re-establish the open, hall quality of the original 1927 Salvation Army Gathering Hall and express the charm of the existing fabric. In tandem with this a new accessible main entrance has been created down an existing side lane, this is marked in the streetscape by a new lightweight metal Beacon, turning a former dark and uninviting space into a recognisable, bright and welcoming entrance for all. We are especially pleased to be the only project from Scotland that has been shortlisted in this category. Good luck to all the other finalists!
