In early 2023, O’DonnellBrown in collaboration with @whitearkitekter won The Crichton Project design competition. Later that year, @thecrichtontrust partnered with the @scottishwomensinstitutes (SWI) to progress the project into a Learning and Heritage Centre celebrating the parallel histories and activities of the Crichton Estate and the SWI. By April 2024, we completed Stages 0-1 for the @sosenterprise_ , which included developing the project brief and undertaking a more detailed site and Merrick Building analysis before advancing to concept designs. Our work during Stage 0 began with a process of consultation and building visits. We organised events with the SWI members, senior board members of both The Crichton and SWI, and SWI and Crichton archivists. The conversations which took place with each consultee developed our understanding of both organisations and identified shared touch points; creativity and making, women’s histories, community, and landscape and gardens. The touch points diagram explores how these themes can be aligned to the proposed building programme.
