Mayflower Primary School

Adding a new hall, group room spaces and rooftop garden as part of a general school improvement project.

This scheme was borne out of the ‘primary capital programme’ initiative instigated by the government at the time to improve existing school accommodation.

The project centered around the removal of ad-hoc existing canopies and extensions to provide a much needed new hall as well as additional group room spaces. An initial concern was that valuable external space would be reduced as part of the adding of new accommodation. In fact the project not only provided the required internal accommodation but in fact increased external areas by folding the playground under the new hall to a generous and top lit atrium. The hall then also had a new garden / external area built on the roof. The orientation of the hall windows responded to its challenging context to minimize overlooking and to maximise sunlight.
