The Foundry is a residential development of 209 new homes on the site of the former Etna Foundry in Glasgow’s south side. Designed for New City Vision, the development transforms a prominent brownfield site by providing a mix of 2-bed and 3-bed flats, maisonettes, and townhouses all centred around a ‘green link’ which connects Maxwell Road on the southern edge of the site to a new cycle route at the north west corner of the site. All 199 mid market rent apartments were delivered for Thriving Investments, part of the Places for People Group, the UKs leading social enterprise and market leader in placemaking, regeneration and development. The 10 townhouses were delivered for New City Vision for private sale.

The masterplan concept for the site was derived from the massing and building footprint of the historic foundry buildings which has been reinterpreted and distributed across the site. The new residential blocks have been arranged to enclose courtyard gardens, address the new green corridor, and have been positioned in a north south orientation to benefit from solar gain. The high density approach to the site is consistent with the nearby tenemental streets. Blocks have been separated to break down the overall scale of the development but are visually connected by a continuous roof line which traces through the site. Brick is the defining characteristic of the scheme, referencing the existing Foundry architecture and with a nod to the establishment of the material as part of Glasgow’s new vernacular.
